Travis "Brotha Trav the Godbrotha" Wright didn't write his first poem until he was 27. A lost job in Northern Virginia brought him home to Augusta — a city with no spoken word scene. So he built one. Handprinted flyers, a Broad Street culture shop, and a belief that people would show up. They did.
In 2012, the City of Augusta made history by naming him its first-ever Poet Laureate — not just for his poetry, but for the community he'd spent fifteen years building one night at a time.
In 2013, Brotha Trav survived an aortic dissection — airlifted from Augusta to Emory. He calls it his greatest struggle and his greatest blessing. It's the lived truth behind every word he speaks from the stage.
Beyond the stage, Brotha Trav is the proud Founder and CEO of Uprise Events and Entertainment, an organization dedicated to elevating local culture and curating spaces where art and community thrive.
Today he performs most often in cafe settings — intimate, jazz-warm rooms where spoken word lives closest to the soul. His weekly radio show Hidden Gems Social Session reaches listeners in over 150 countries. His work never stops.
I printed the flyers myself. I didn't know if anyone would come — but they came, and they kept coming.— Brotha Trav the Godbrotha · Augusta, Georgia
